Due to TCP/IP Error - unable to get on internet

Hi

My newest dilemma... can not access the internet thru my cable modem. "Can't find the page...". ISP's tech was able to hookup and access the network with his laptop. So at that point, we decide that problem is with my PC probably the NIC.

So I replaced the ethernet card. Still no results. Doing an IPCONFIG, gives me the locally generated ip address (169.254.196..) and NO Gateway, No DNS. Tried to do the IPCONFIG /renew. In return I got the following error (actual wording): "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" Doing Ipconfig /all gives me the nic address, and DHCP enabled. So assuming that software issue, installed the XP-Pro (was due for a long time). Still the same error message. Everything else appears to be working fine

All of this may have been started when last week, I tried to install VComs' SystemSuite and by mistake installed also GhostSurf. Both of those were un-installed immediately. But after that I was not able to do a restore to an earlier point

Any Suggestion, Help, Guidance or at least a word of sympathy for the deceased PC (if that may be the ultimate solution)
I am using AMD 1.3 with 256 RAM and a 60G drive

Guys and Gals... your time and help is very appreciated in advance. THANKS

Danial

You didn't say whether you are using XP, but if you are I
simply suggest that you do a system restore and go back
greater then one week or before the problems started
happening, this should remove everything you did in the
last week and hopefully return the PC settings back to
where they were.

Richie,
I am sorry that I didn't specify the XP. Well, I was using XP-Home. And yes restoring was my very first attempt to do, as I am very much into the habit of creating a restore point before installing anything. There were at least 4 other restore points which were deleted except the one I created. And when tried to do so, restore operation was failed.

As I mentioned earlier, upgraded to XP-Pro. That did nothing to resolve the problem. Finally, today, I installed XP-Pro on a seprate partition as fresh install and not upgrade. And yes I am able to get on the internet fine. I just did it before coming to work, so didn't have much time to check it thoroughly, but the latest is that I am on. However, I am still skeptical about the error message and will be looking for that

By all means, Thanks for looking into the issue and your time

This utility (which will fit on a floppy) should fix you up.
