Hi,

I have a Tyan Thunder 7520i motherboard
I am looking to buy two processors form a firend, but they have
different steppings is this a problem?
one is a
Intel Xeon 3.0ghz 800mhz, 1mb L2, stepping SL7TC
the other is
Intel Xeon 3.0ghz, 800mhz, 1mb L2, stepping SL7PE
Are they compatible with eachother?

Thanks
James

From our experience as a dealer, they should work fine.

I had a dual PIII (933mhz) board a while ago which originally had a single
CPU.

I bought a second CPU (same speed), but at that time was unaware of
'stepping' on CPU's.

Had nothing but problems - system hanging, bsod's. I eventually got a second
CPU with same stepping and it worked a treat.

I would assume Xeon's may have same problems.

On my system, I didn't notice much difference in speed apart when using
Microsoft Flight Sim and even then it was only s slight increase.

Intel provides a stepping matrix to show which are compatible in SMP
systems and they usually are.

If I remember correctly the 'lower' stepping should be the primary processor.
