xeon retail boxed missing thermal compound?

I'm building a dual xeon 2.8 on a supermicro m/b
I ordered 2 Xeon 2.8ghz retail boxed versions that came with fans and
heatsinks.

the pachage did not come with any thermal compound although intel's
site clearly shows it is supposed to:

http://support.intel.com/support/processors/xeon/sb/CS-007757.htm#2

has anyone else recently purchased a Xeon boxed retail recently and
can let me know if their package included thermal compound?

Get it at Radio Shack: 276-1372 for $1.99.

Neither came with thermal compound? Did you check the heat sink and see
if there was a thermal pad attached?

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. To jump to the end

attached to the bottom of the heatsink was a grey soft rubbery
substance. could that be a thermal pad?

That's probably it.
You should also make sure there is not a clear plastic coating on the pad
that you need to remove. The pink thermal pads I've seen usually have a blue
type of tape that's removed and easily seen, but the grey thermal pads I've
seen have a clear covering that is not easily seen.

By the way, the pad you see is probably a phase change material made by
Shin Etsu which is very good.

Yes. Sometimes there's a thin piece of glossy tape over the pad to
protect it but sometimes not. If there is protective tape, remove it. If
not, install with the thermal pad.

I just got an answer from intel regarding the grey substance on the
heatsink. they are saying that it is the thermal compound and should
not be removed.
