dual core intel (2x 1mb) with agp intel 865 motherboard?

865 chipset does not support LGA 775 cpus - all Pentium D's are 775.

865's support 754 pin Pentiums, Northwood and Prescott.

Now, if they did we'd have a reasonable upgrade path, but alas...

Sorry...

What??? I have a P5P800 with the i865 chipset and it only accepts LGA
775 cpus.

If you click on the link in the OP it sure looks like LGA 775 plus the
writeup says it's LGA 775 and 865PE chipset. The ASUS site also says it
supports dual core CPU's. The CPU will definately work with the motherboard.
If that chipset will will cause a performance penalty I have no idea. If I
was buying a dual core CPU I would use a different board with a newer
chipset and PCI-X

oops, you are right, the P5P800 is 865 and lga775, the only one of those
I've ever seen; sorry! ASUS has kludged that setup together, and I did a
quick search and they are having trouble with it - the Pentium 9xx series
doesn't work w/o a recent bios upgrade, amoung other issues. ASUS usually
makes very good boards, but they do have some stinkers in their history.

It does sound like it's a kludge. Everybody makes some mistakes. The OP
would definitely be better off with a newer chipset. There are quite a few
865 boards with lga775 but I don't know of any others that try to support
dual core CPU's.

Depending on the computers primary function, say it's gaming, you might be
better off with an AMD CPU and a socket 939 mobo config.. AMD puts the memory
controller on their CPU's which makes it easier to mix and match CPU's &
socket 939 mobo's..

Intel's memory controller is built into the mobo's chipset and may not work
across the board without the proper chipset match, this may differ with each
OEM board maker.. You should always verify with the OEM that their board will
work with an Intel CPU since the renaming debacle has confused everyone even
board makers..
Intel's 955X chipset according to reports I've read claim it's suspect in
it's support for the dual-core Pentium Extreme 955, even though some mobo
makers claim support, make sure first..
The 975X chipset should be a safe choice for the immediate future with the
ultimate dual-core 955 Pentium Extreme editions.. The dual core 9xx Pentium D
series, would be my choice, (to save some coin) over the Pentium Extreme
editions that are basically dual-core Pentium D's with Hyperthreading turned
on/enabled anyway.. <my opinion>
