Dual-Boot XP & Vista

I'm one of those "not happy campers" you refer to. I have a lovely XP OS for
my dead computer, but when I bought the new one, I found I couldn't load it
without a great deal of headache. Not that Vista isn't its own headache.
Whenever I try to do "add shortcut to desktop" I get a message that "explorer
has stopped working". Any ideas? I am completely menu-bound and can't put a
single shortcut anywhere.

Thanks, Sue

It has always been the same under any version of Windows regarding dual
boots. When you had 2000, you had to have it on 1st, then load a clean
install of XP. Nothing's changed in that regard.
Partition you hard drive into 2 drives and formatt. Then install XP on one
drive, FIRST, then Vista on the other.

I agree with Dennis, lots of people will have to buy unnessary hardware just
to make vista run right (which is a giant rip off because my machine isn't
old). Just for grins go look and see how many cracks there are for vista
ALREADY. That should tell anyone there are lots of giant holes in the
program, meaning it isn't nearly as secure as they say it is. I usually do
that as part of my reasearch to get new program ideas anyway. Like i said
the people who HAVE to get vista because its on a new machine aren't going to
be happy campers at all. We'll just have to wait for service paks to see if
it will become stable. One thing that has bugged me already when i did a
compatibility check was that visual studio 2003 won't work properly, and yet
they put a fix out for 2005 version. I swear i smell a flop coming just like
ME. Why mess with an already great operating system, even 2000 was great of
course there were very few changes between the two. I have yet to hear one
person that actually has all nice things to say. Want proof check out the
MSDN site, they are still serving and releasing things for XP, is that a red
flag?
To each his own but i'm not compromising my system for at least 2 years
maybe a little less if it turns out ALL positve :)

That is interesting because I just bought a Vista Machine. I put it out in
the living room. I had no way of getting internet to it except through a
wireless card. This wireless card was a WTRG54M Ver 4.0. I looked it up on
the lynksys website and they only had visa drivers for 4.1 version. I then
proceeded to install the card with the XP driver on the Vista OS and it
worked fine. Has anyone else seen this happen?

Did you see if you can update the firmware?

I can't find a WTRG54M on the Linksys website but there is a WRT54G and
it had a firmware update to 4.21.1

Go to:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%
2FLayout&packedargs=page%3D2%26cid%3D1115416835852%26c%
3DL_Content_C1&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%
2FVisitorWrapper&SubmittedElement=Linksys%2FFormSubmit%
2FProductDownloadSearch&sp_prodsku=1124916802645

and select Firmware.

If that horrendous URL does not work go to the Linksys website,
navigate to Technical Support and put WRT54G in the search box for
model. That shows a bunch of submodels but no -M

I have to chime in here with my 2 cents. I know practically nothing about
computers, os, or software. I had to buy a laptop for my new job and I'm
sorry I waited a week or 2 too long to order because all the new PC's are
coming out with VISTA. I hate it. I even got the Vista with 64 something or
other (that's how ignorant I am. I just know it has more memory or whatever
than the 32).

Anyway, none of my old software works with it, not even Windows' own Picutre
It! My computer keeps locking up and I have to turn off and then turn on &
keep hitting that F8 key to get to "last know good configuration" to start up
again. Sometimes I get it to work, other times it just locks up again.

I even bought software through Dell at the same time I ordered this computer
and even that software doesn't work properly: CoPilot Navigator & Lo Jack.

I loved the XP system I have on my desktop, but that computer is in storage
on the other side of the country right now.

I am constantly on the phone for tech support or with my tech support here
on the job.

Right now we are planning on installing XP on this computer. What a waste
of money!

Thanks for letting me vent.

Does Dell have a return policy you can take advantage of? They still XP
installed Laptops, at least in their Business Section and maybe elsewhere.

Personally I would not touch a laptop with VISTA on it until SP1 comes along
especially if there is any hardware that is important to me like an all in one
printer/scanner.

Having said that, I've had no difficulty on my desktop in getting older
Software working fine: WORD XP/2002 and the rest of Works Suite 2006 which is a
massive collection and plenty of other stuff that I had before VISTA.

If you want to post details of the applications you are having problems with
you might get some help -- but I'd start a new Subject for it.

Good luck

You are saying that you have had a tri-boot including Vista and XP since
1993. I don't think so, neither one of those operating systems were even
heard of in 1993. Back then I was using win 3.1

Silly! I have been using the methodology since 1993.
