Dual Boot XP/98 - I DID IT

I'm posting this in case anyone has a similar problem. For more details see
my question posted 13 January 2007.

I was trying to get XP to dual boot with Win 98. All the help I saw was to
modify the XP boot.ini file but I kept getting the error message missing or
corrupt hal.dll

I solved the problem by making the Win98 disk the first disk in the BIOS
Boot order (rather than the XP one) and modifying the Win 98 boot.ini file
along the lines of:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\windows= "Windows XP Pro" /fastdetect

Works fine now
This will make sense to anyone struggling along the same lines

Windows 98 doesn't use a boot.ini file. I'm glad you got it working but
technically that file is a Windows XP file. To set up a dual boot with
Windows 98 and XP is quite simple.

Install Windows 98
Install Windows XP to a different partition or hard drive making sure during
the install you do not change or format the partition Windows 98 is on.

You will be able to dual boot. If you do things in a different order or have
a very unusual setup you may have to edit the boot.ini file.

You should keep this in the original thread.

It's quite simple if it works right first time ! I think something went
wrong when I first installed XP. It tried to install itself on my Windows
98 drive (I didn't get the choice of the different drive), which is
presumably how the boot.ini file and the other XP files ended up in my Win 98
installation. A more experienced user would probably have spotted the
problem and aborted the installation sooner and avoided the situation. I'm
just happy I found the work around.

You are, of course, right to point out how it should work.

Thank you for your helpful comment.

You're welcome. There is no advantage to splitting up a thread. Now if
someone reads this thread and is interested in what you did in the first
place to get into it, they have to hunt up the other thread. It's always
best to keep things in one thread.
