Dual boot with 2000 server

My main PC has 2000 Server installed on C: formatted NTFS.
On F: I have 200 Server installed as a domain controller (also NTFS).

C was installed first and then F: was added as a dual-boot.

I no longer need the domain controller version on F: and I would like
to replace it with XP Pro installed on F:, still dual booting with
2000 Server on C:.

Is this possible?

Is there a version of Upgrade Advisor that will run on 2000 Server?

thanks

Hi,

It's not an upgrade path, you would have to format or at least delete the
existing system folder, then do a clean installation.

I suggest you do this:

1. Boot into Win2000 Server on C:.
2. Delete the Windows directory on drive F:.
3. Boot the machine with your WinXP CD.
4. Install WinXP on drive F:.

This will retain your dual-boot capability.

That worked, thanks very much. However ...

I now have XP Pro on F: and 2000 Server on C: as I wanted but when I'm
running XP and try to access C: with explorer I get...

C:\ not accessible
Access is denied

This would not be much of a problem except when I try install SP2 from
the Windows Update site I get an error telling me that I need 1 MB
more on C: for the install to succeed. As far as XP is concerned
there is zero free space on C: because it has no access to C:.

EXCEPT that I can change the default boot partition which presumably
means access to boot.ini is possible.

Can I tell XP not to use C: or can I give XP access to C: at all
times?

thanks

You can probably solve your problem by creating and using
identical accounts/passwords for the two OSs.

I was already using the same username/password combo in both systems.
What fixed the problem was going into Win2k and giving Everyone access
to C:. When I went into WinXP I had full access to C: and the SP2
installation worked fine.

thanks
