If I were to create a Dual Boot with Win98SE and XP
Pro, on separate hard drives(Win98SE on "C" and XPPro on "D") and decided
not to use XP Pro, what do I have to do to go back to my original setup and
use Windows 98SE .

The dual boot system would be allowed to be created using the XP Pro disk.

Thanks in advance,

BL

If you can get WinXP to boot from a second hard drive (I assume the slave
drive), let me know. I thought WinXP insisted on booting from the first
physical drive, or does the loader just have to be on the first physical
drive. I know that Linux can run from any drive but its loader must be on the
first physical drive.

In XP, right click My Computer, click Properties and pick the Advanced Tab.
Then choose Startup and Recovery. That will let you change the default
operating system back to Windows 98. Then set "time to display list of
operating systems" to zero. If you ever wanted the option back, you'd have
to go into boot.ini and edit the zero back to however long you want the
menu to display.

I did not make my self exactly clear. I want possibly to get rid of XP Pro
and use only Win98 on the "C" drive.

It appears your suggestion leaves XP Pro on the drive.

Thanks,

BL

Normally, assuming Win9x is installed to the C: drive, you'd just
have to boot from your Win98/Me startup diskette, type "SYS C:." Then
delete C:\NTLDR, C:\NTDETECT.COM, C:\BOOT.INI, C:\BOOTSEC.DOS, and
C:\PAGEFILE.SYS. Delete or reformat the WinXP directory/partition, as
applicable. Remove the startup diskette and reboot.

It's the same with WinXP. Absent any 3rd party boot managers, WinXP's
system files (boot.ini, NTLDR, and NTDetect.com) must be on the primary
active (iow, bootable) partition. The remainder of the OS can be
installed on any other physical or logical drive or partition.

XP can be installed on any partition, however the three files XP needs
to boot must be on the first active partition.

Well, you can use your Windows 98 startup disk and at the A:\ prompt type
"sys:c", That will get rid of the boot menu altogether and you can do
what you want with D drive. Remove it, format it and use it as an extra
drive, install Linux on it.... -)

Thank you..the former response indicated that the command "SYS:C" would be
suffecient, but if the other files NTLDR,NTDETECT etc would still be there
it makes sense to delete them.

Thanks to all.

Boot your 98 startup floppy, give
SYS C:
That will restore your normal direct 98 boot, and you can then delete
the XP material from D:. I would leave its boot files in C: but if you
really want to you can delete boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr.
