dual boot setup

Help please.

I ccannot get to my product id, so cannot get help from
MS.

Problem: I cannot get my computer to boot into win xp.

History:

Compaq 5100CA purchased in dec 2001 with win me installed
& win xp update certificate

attempted to install xp update in aug 2002 & failed.

purchased & installed 2nd HD and partitioned it into 2 x
20 GB drives [F: and G:] in Sept 2002. Acquired win XPH
and successfully installed it on the 2nd hard drive
(drive F:) and had a dual boot system.

Then win me wouldn't load except in safe mode, so i
removed it from the list of installed systems (on the
boot.ini file, I think) and continued with a single-boot
win xph system.

in april 2004 the system failed. The service contract
only covered the original configuration, so the original
HD was replaced with a new one and the original factory
win me was reinstalled on it. The second HD was taken
out. When i reinstall it now, it shows up as drive D:
with the files and win directory intact.

However, I don't know how to change the system so that I
can get a dual-boot system going, or a single boot system
using the win xph drive as the boot drive.

can you help me?

When ME was reinstalled, it most likely deleted the XP boot files,
like boot.ini. My guess is that the installer, simply copied an image
of a fresh install onto your HD, thus wiping anything that was there
before.

You have two options (that I can think of):

1. Reinstall XP from scratch, thus reinstalling the boot files.
2. Use your recovery disc to attempt to repair your installation
or start the install process and select repair instead of install.

ALthough I have experience installing multi boot systems, I have
never encountered a situation as yours. Once I had a multiboot
with Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 and I had some problems
with WIn 2K (my fault!) and just decided to reinstall everything.

Good luck!

Thanks.

I was wondering if I could do a win xp repair install.

I would guess that job 1 is to backup everything on the
win xp disk, and then try some repair work.
