Dual boot problem with XP and 98

i have a system that has XP and 98 on it and was set up for a dual boot. 98
was giving me major prblems, so i decided to format and re-install 98. 98 was
installed on C and XP was on the other part of the partition, drive F. i
formatted C only and successfully re-installed 98, but now i cant access XP.
have i lost everything on the F drive that contained XP? or can i somehow
still get back those files? please i need help!!!

Hi,

You lost the XP bootloader when you formatted C:. Boot with the XP CD, load
the Recovery Console. From the command prompt, copy ntldr and ntdetect.com
to the root of C, then run fixboot.

ntdetect.com, ntldr and boot.ini reside and c: and need to be restored. If
you need to format c: you can copy these files to a floppy to allow booting
of 98/XP and file restoration.

John, when you formatted the C: drive you wiped out everything on that
drive/partition including your "boot" files that allowed you to boot to
drives other than the C: that have Operating Systems on them.
You have not destroyed anything on your F: drive.
You need to either recreate the boot files on the C: drive or re-install XP
on the F: drive which will re-create them.
There are four files that should be on the C: drive to boot to your XP
drive: BOOT.INI, NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and PAGEFILE.SYS. The BOOT.INI is the
file that has the list of Operating Systems and their drive locations that
gives you the boot select window so you can get to them.
