I have set up a dual boot and the screen counts down before
automatically loading default OS.

What file controls this and can I change the countdown to a smaller
number of seconds?

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab, then change the Timeout number
and click Apply.

GTT:
In Windows XP, go to Control Panel>System>Advanced tab>Startup and Recovery
Settings button. In the System Startup section, make the desired change(s)
and OK your way out.

Right click on My Computer, select Properties. Click on the Advanced tab
and under Startup & Recovery click the Settings button. Under System
startup, change the "Time to display list of operating systems" to what
you desire.

Thanks everyone, interesting 3 different ways to do the same task.

I seemed to recall that the name of the file to change was boot.ini
but when I searced for this file using search nothing turns up if you
search for a file with boot in it you get lots but not this one.

Curious as to why.

No need to search. Just go to c:\. Since it is a hidden file, it does
not show up in a search.

You're correct, it is boot.ini and the reason you don't see it is that
it is a hidden system file. You can manually edit it if you wish but it
is much easier and safer to use one of the other methods given.

At Control Panel - System - Advanced - in Start up and Error click
Settings and you can adjust the delay there

It's in the Control Panel setting.
