Joe

Hi,

I have 2 hard disks, 1 installed with Win XP, 2nd
installed with win98. Both are connected to the 1st IDE
controller.
and i have arc path in boot.ini file as follows,

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)="Microsoft windows
xp" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)="Microsoft windows 98"

I can boot to winxp, But when i boot to win98, Error msg
like
<System Root>\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupted
<System Root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted

Could anyone tell me how I can dual boot winxp and win98

Sincerely,

Joe

It sounds like you have both XP and 98 installed as standalone systems. The
Microsoft multiboot technique intertwines the OS's, so has to be setup at
the time the second OS is installed. It can't be added after the fact, so
what you're trying to do will never work.

Your best bet is to use a third-party boot manager. They are designed to do
true multibooting where each partition behaves as a standalone system. This
is actually better anyway, because it means you can easily upgrade or
eliminate either HD or OS in the future. If you were to setup a dualboot
the Microsoft way, it's much harder to change things in the future -- just
scan the posts in this newsgroup to see all the grief from people stuck in
that very situation.

There are a number of good boot managers -- XOSL (www.xosl.org), BootIt NG
(www.bootitng.com), GAG (www.sourceforge.net), System Commander, and
PowerQuest's Boot Magic, to name a few of the most popular.
