DSS Agent

-I am aware the Beta doesnt find cookies and Data miners but should it find
more serious gremlins? I installed the Beta on a pc which I know to have a
recurring problem with spyware called DSS Agent. This is put on each time a
Family Tree program by a company called Broderund (or similar) is run.
Interestingly, the DSS Agent is detected and removed by both Lavasoft
Ad-Aware Personel, and Spybot Search and Destroy. However, the Windows
Defender Beta 2 does not detect it. Perhaps this is expected but it rather
suprised me. I report the finding by way of feedback in any event. As for the
DSS Agent, the only solution has been not to use this program.

I'm surprised to hear of this lack of detection - perhaps that DSS Agent is an
old malware problem and MS decided not to target it.
My best information is that Broderbund removed this element from their software
some years ago.

randy,

yes Broderund appears to have removed it from their software but havnet
done anything for existing software users, except issue a DSS Agent removal
too. This removes the spyware, but it is returned next time the program runs.
The software seems to have been sold on, and none of the email contacts take
any responsibility or reply to emails. Defender certainly doesnt detect it.
As the Broderund software is quite old that could, as you suggest, be the
reason for Defender not including DSS agent in its targets, but it still
surprises me. Lavasoft and Spybot clearly think its current enough to target.
