not valid windows image, other problems

After installing the Spyware program in Windows XP SP2
about 2 days ago, upon restart I get error boxes
indicating "not valid windows image" for various dlls,
including oleacc.dll and cscdll.dll. I get a windows
logon screen that should not and did not appear
previously, and the shutdown screen is corrupted (icons
for the logout, shutdown, restart options not visible.)
Quicken 2004 will not start, sometimes complaining about
the invalid windows image of oleacc.dll. When it ran, MS
Spyware did not find any spyware except for remnants of a
very old Broderbund DSS agent, and a fresh virus scan
today found no viruses. I uninstalled Spyware and did a
Windows system restore to a point a couple of days ago
prior to the Spyware install, but it did not change
anything.

There's more. I tried to access Windows Update, and get
an 0x80248011 error from the MS site. The knowledgebase
says this is an internet cache problem, which can be
fixed by deleting cookies, files and history. I did that
but it didn't help.

I can't be absolutely sure that installing Spyware was
the only change made to my computer. Things change all
the time. For example, when I started this morning a
system tray popup said an automatic windows update was
installed. to the best of my knowledge no other programs
or significant changes have been made in the last week or
so.

I tried to scan other messages for similar problems and
found none, but there are a lot of messages. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
