DSL runs like dial-up

K

Kojak

I called the ISP and they asked me to type msconfig in the
Run box. Error message popped up telling me it can not
find msconfig or one of it's components.
The ISP tells me that is the cause of all my problems.
What do I need to do to get msconfig (or one of it's
components) back into my system?

Need your guidance. And remember you are writing to a
newbie!

Thanks

Forget about MSConfig.exe - what is your actual DSL problem ?

Who is your DSL provider ?

Do you use DHCP or PPPoE ?

Both Outlook and Internet Explorer run very slow. After I
check my e-mail, then close Outlook, I'll open I.E. It
usually does not bring up my home page (Google). I have
to turn off the computer and reboot. During shutdown, I
frequently get a message saying WAB Notification Window.
And I have to click end task.
Then I can open I.E. Each page opens slowly.

DSL provider = Bellsouth

I seem to recall seeing PPP in options/configuration.

So WHO is your ISP? I want to make sure I never use that one because they
are obvious staffed by idiots, or jokers that don't want to do their job and
spewing false information to their customers. Either way, that's an ISP
that is bad news. Or maybe you should report this joker's bogus "advice" to
the ISP to get him/her straighted out ... right out the door!

msconfig.exe does not come with Windows 2000. You can borrow a copy from
Windows XP to run under Windows, or download a copy of it from
http://downloads.thetechguide.com/msconfig.zip. Or you could use Mike Lin's
freebie Startup applet (a Google search on "Mike Lin" should find it).

You'll need to provide more details than "DSL runs like dial-up". What does
that mean? That you have to reestablish a connection all the time? Do you
have a [NAT] router? If so, have you enabled its Auto Reconnect option?

If you don't have a router, try running the following commands in a DOS
shell:

ipconfig /release *
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
