DSL connection drops whenever I VPN into work

I have a home dsl connection through SBC. Between my Dell
computer and the "SpeedStream DSL modem" is a "Hawking
PN9230 Broadband VPN Router."

At my company's office is a server running Linux. I can
establish a VPN connection to the office server, but
within just a few seconds "Connection Manager" (the
software that comes with the SBC DSL installation) shows
that the DSL connection is dropped. Trying to access the
office server, or any website for that matter, verifies
that the DSL connection has indeed gone away. As soon as
I close the VPN connection (actually within 5-10 seconds),
the DSL connection comes back (as indicated by Connection
Manager and my restored connectivity to the Internet).

Neither SBC or Hawking tech support have been any (useful)
help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can't access the Internet while using VPN

Symptom: after establishing a VPN connection, you may not be able to access
the Internet because the VPN takes over your existing connection and all
traffic to use the VPN default gateway on the remote network. The remote
network may not allow VPN clients to access the Internet via their gateway.

Resolutions:
1) If you don't need to access the entire VPN resources, disable the "use
default gateway on remote network" option in the properties of the VPN
connection.
2) Edit route table manually if you know how to or check routing page on
this web site.
3) For the security reason, some firewall/routers like Cisco PIX do not
allow access the Internet after establishing the VPN and you cannot modify
the routing table. You may setup split-tunnel.
