DrWatson Postmortem Debugger

Since installing the XP SP2, I am unable to access pretty much anything that
has to do with the administration of my computer. I can't access my control
panel, my computer, etc. When I try my pc locks up and I get an error
message saying the DRWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered problems and
needs to close and would I like to send an error report. I've clicked yes to
send the error report and after it is sent everything locks up and I have to
do a hard shut down and reboot. The only icon on my desktop or on my start
menu that I am able to access is internet explorer and occasionally adaware.
Can someone please help me?? I just recently started using my computer at
home and am brand new with the DSL. I have downloaded all of the security
updates and have performed all the scans but I can't use anything except for
Internet Explorer! HELP!?

Lots of people found very similar problems with anything that uses Windows
Explorer, the control panel, the recycle bin, searching, folder shortcuts,
etc. I saved postings from over 200 people who reported this in this group.

Some blame everything on viruses and spyware, almost nobody with this problem
ever found that was the cause. Some blame this on "bad applications", few
ever found that was the cause. Some blame this on "corrupted user profile"
but there is nothing that can diagnose that to confirm this. Some blame this
on shell extensions, a found ShellExView would let them try turning off some
of these and see if the problem went away. Some did find that creating a
new user, immediately switching to that user, and then trying to do a task
would work, but that didn't work for others. Some did find that booting
into Safe Mode would allow them to do somethings, others found that didn't
work. Microsoft did, and might still, provide free support for people who
are having problems with SP2, you might try that. You might go to google
and in the Groups page and in the Advanced Search page limit searching to
just this group and then search for Windows Explorer Problem and see how
many people are reporting the same thing. Most of the time nobody knows
what the answer to this is and few ever report finding a solution.

Something in SP2 broke windows explorer for a variety of people and nobody
knows what that was or how to fix it. Sorry.

I have experienced similar problems with my son's machine. I found a post
from a Microsoft MVP who suggested to go through all of the Spybot, Virus
Check, Adware check etc.. The to repair the installation. I was able to boot
up in safe mode and was able to access anything on the computer. I then got
the original CD and changed the boot order, hitting F2 when it first tried to
load and repaired the installation from the CD. The machine worked just fine
for a day and half. Then it was back to the same old problems. No control
panel, no my documents and a DR. Watson error. I went out to DOS through Run
and found a bunch of trash in the temp directory. Looked suspicious.
