Drvindex.inf file MISSING

I'm trying to fix a Dell laptop with Windows XP Professional on it (and it
looks like SP2 was installed at the same time as the system) and encountered
something rare, judging by the lack of information on the Internet:
the Drvindex.inf file, which acts as a pointer file to Driver.cab and
SP2.cab files for installers has gone missing on this computer and I can't
install any devices that don't come with a whole set of their own drivers.
For example, I was not able to install a brand new iPod or a flash drive
from SunDisk that does not require any drivers when being installed on XP on
any other PCs.
There is another thread, discussing how people are having trouble installing
printers, and the very last post there mentions a similar problem. Otherwise
than that, there is no information on how to fix this and get that file back.
Through researching, I've figured if I reinstall SP2, it is supposed to
create a new Drvindex.inf file.
Problem is this computer already has SP2 and I can't find where it is (i.e.
MS recommended "go to Add/Remove Programs and remove 'Windows XP Service Pack
2 there" doesn't work and SP installation files,
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe or Xpsp2.exe are not present on this system)
to uninstall it and then install it again.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
