Drops out

I press the start button and the computer whirs into
action.Then something seems to drop out and there is no
sound,no whirring.Sometimes it drops out in half a second
and sometimes gets as far as the fanfare.
To try to start again the power must be switched and then
press start button.It takes several tries before it
finally stays on.
Any suggestions?
