Driver Problems

I downloaded and updated my video driver via Windows
Update. The monitor display developed immediate problems.
Error message said it was a problem with the video driver.
I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP
using the recovery CD I received with the computer. The
display problem still recurs. Shouldn't the reformat and
reinstall have deleted the updated display driver and
restored my old but good driver?

I would certainly think that a reformat and reinstall would eliminate the
troublesome drivers.
I had the same problem with a driver update from Nvidia. I deleted the
drivers then restored ONLY the OEM drivers from the Gateway restore CD. End
of problem.
Windows also has a "rollback" feature that you can use to restore earlier
drivers. I couldn't use it because I had downloaded another "update" after
the first one.

Download a new set of graphic drivers from the manufacturer's website, not the WindowsUpdate site.
