drive space mismatch

hi,
I have xp pro sp2 on my c drive that has 20 GB capacity. When I check the
properties of this drive for space information, it shows total used space to
be 9.7 GB, but when I select all the folders in C drive, the total space
occupied by them is shown to be 6.5 GB only. What is causing this mismatch? I
have tried this by unhiding hidden files and folders as well, but the result
is the same.

You dont mention available space only used, however,a 20gb hd really will
only have 17gb available,a 120gb maybe 117gb.

My 100 GB laptop drive only reports 93GB. Anybody know the reason?

Disk manufacturers calculate a Gigabyte as 1000x1000x1000
bytes. The OS calculates a Gigabyte as 1024x1024x1024.

The ratio between the two is approximately 1.074

100(disk GBs)/1.074 = 93(OS GBs)

Could it be that the hidden space is reserved for recycle bin? I see that
2GB has been allocated for recycle bin...I am sure this mismatch is not
because of binary calculation because I have compared "Used Space" as shown
by OS for comparison and not what the hard drive specification has written.
