Drive Performance / OS Installation Qs

Jonathan Appleseed

I am about to build an AMD64 PC with an ABIT AV8 (has integrated SATA)
and I have some questions about drive performance and installing XP Home:

WHICH DRIVE FOR OSs?
I want to reinstall XP Home/Linux on my 40 GB IDE ATA100 drive (<2 mths
old) and use a new 160 GB SATA150 drive for personal files.
-Would I sacrifice much performance by doing so?
-Will I need to use an SATA driver disk during XP install (no RAID)?

WHICH SHOULD BE MASTER: 16x D-L RECORDER OR 16x DVD-ROM/CDRW?
-I will most frequently use the DVD/CDRW drive, but I'm curious: would
it make a difference which is "master"?

It's not a,"Master/Slave" problem as such for speed but what
busses/IDE ports they are on.
If you are going to do a lot of copying from one CD drive to the other
you want them on separate IDE ports.
On my system I have my CDR/W drive on a separate IDE port from my
system hard drive. This allows maximum speed for burning but I also
have a plain CD drive which is a Slave on my system drive. This way if
I want to burn from one Cd drive to the other I get max burn speed and
if I want to burn an image off my drive to the CDR/W drive I still get
max burn speed.
It's a common misconception that having two devices on the same IDE
chain limits the fast device to the slower device, this only occurs if
both devices are being used at the same time because of
the,"Parent/Child relationship" of IDE ports.

HTH :)
