Drive mapping to linux in Windows XP

I am install several windows XP computers on a network.
my problem is that the old win 98/2000 machines are able
to map drives to a linux server without asking for
passwords but the xp systems keep asking for a username
and password.

Hi, John -

Are the machines XP Home or XP Professional?

XP Home machines will always prompt for a username and
password, I'm afraid - as they can't log on to a domain.
XP Professional machines should work fine as long as the
username and password on the XP box match a valid user
account on the Linux machine. Another thing to try if
they're XP Professional machines is turning off simple
file sharing.
