Using WinXP SP2.I just installed a 120gb hardrive, using Maxtor MaxBlast to
format it and copy files from my original boot drive (40gb). I then swapped
the drives around, changing the jumpers and booted up .. bios sees the 120gb
drive as master and the old drive as slave, fine so far, but windows shows
the 120gb drive as "D" and the 40gb as "C" even though it says they're "0"
and "1" respectively!! So I run diskmgmt.msc and try to rename them, but it
wont let me rename or remove old drive, saying it has a pagefile on it, and
won't do anything with the new drive since it is the boot "0" drive. I then
disconnect the old drive, reboot, and now the new drive will only go up to
the blue screen (just before the welcome screen) with the logo on it and
quit!! Where do I go from here? (it's 3a.m. and I'm losing it!!!!)
TIA,
kt

First off,xp doesnt copy very well, and maxblaster is uncapable of copying xp
to another drive.About the only use maxblaster has in xp,is to get error
codes
for warranty (RMA)...You should,1st,reinstall the 40gb and set as master, then
boot to xp cd,recovery, press enter for password, then type:DiskPart In
DiskPart,
delete the partition on 120gb,create one, then press Esc key, then type:
FORMAT D: /FS:ntfs D: being the 120.When its thru type:EXIT Boot up xp,
go to run,type:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in DOS window.When
its thru,youre done,turn off,set 120 as master,if it doesnt boot-up 5-10%
dont,
boot to xp cd,install xp,repair this copy...

Move the pagefile to a different drive.
Use the disk management facility to swap the drive letter assignments
around. You may have to use another drive letter as an intermediate.
e.g.
C - Z
D - C
Z - D
etc

If still stuck try posting this over on comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage -
a few good folk hang out there.

I know it's a bit late but I seen several people recommend you never reboot
WinXP with two copies of the OS because it gets confused like this.
Master/slave settings have little to do with drive letters these days
because everything can be mapped.

The recommended proceedure seems to be

Clone the drive.
_Remove_ the original.
Set links on new one to be same as the old one (eg master)
Reboot.
Set links on old one as slave and reconnect.
Reboot and all should be ok.

I almost had the same thing happen to me. I had a 40 gig WD drive and then I
bought a 120 gig Maxtor. The guy at the store said just use the maxblast
utility but I knew I would run into the same problem of one drive being the
boot drive and the other the system drive, so I just transferred it with
PartitionMagic.

To Andrew E.:
question is .... what does "repair this copy" do to SP2? ... do
you just have to reinstall sp2 after the repair? Also, I'm using FAT32 for
all drives due to a software issue with NTFS.

well, after only 12 - 15 hours of headbanging and teeth gritting, on a whim
I popped the MaxBlast floppy in and booted up .. selected "tools" and
clicked on "MBR code update".. just for grins .. it said "MBR updated" ..
and guess what? The new drive booted up (quickly too!) and the old drive was
renamed to "F"!! Go figure, eh? All is well!! Thanx to all that responded.
