Drive icon has gone generic- no autorun.inf to delete- HELP!

Ok, this has driven me to the point of posting a new message. When I click
on My Computer and view the drives, my DVD drive, CD drive, and Mobile Device
under the Other heading all have generic "unknown" icons instead of the
correct drive icon. Everything else is showing up normally.

Everything I have found on this topic points to finding the file
"autorun.inf" in the root directly of the drive with the icon problem and
deleting it. Since these are DVD, CD and Mobile Device drives/folders I am
having no luck-- unless I am doing it wrong. I have changed the view
settings to allow me to see EVERYTHING system and file extension related and
still do NOT find this file in association with these 3 icon problems.

One of the MVPs has a site with a fix dating back to Oct 04 that talks about
deleting registry keys, then rebooting. I am assuming those keys are either
not needed, or windows sees they are missing and creates a registry entry for
the drive without an icon associated??? Maybe I am off here? In either
case, I don't have either one of those registry keys. Do I need to add them?

Any help with this frustration would be appreciated. And, no, I cannot fix
the problem by simply going back to an earlier restore point. Wish it was
that easy.

Thanks in advance,

The "DriveIcons" key? It's needed only if you want to override the default
icon assigned by Windows.

Have you tried repairing the icons using TweakUI?

TweakUI v2.00 for Windows XP/XP MCE [564 KB].

TweakUI v2.10 for Windows XP SP1/XP MCE/2003 [147 KB].

Using TweakUI to repair the icons worked!! Thanks for the quick info!

I am surprised that more of the related posts do not have this information.
Most, if not all, tell the user to look for the file 'autorun.inf' in the
root directory for the drive that is missing its normal icon and delete it.

Thanks again, I hope this helps others too.

I have this exact same problem. Just the generic file icon for the HDD. I've
tried Rebuild Icons in TweakXP and there is nothing called autorun.inf .ini
or .anything in my root directory.

If you go to "Drive" in File Types, the icon is exactly as it should be.

Just not anywhere else.

This has been niggling at me for ages, not leats because it can't be *that*
hard to fix. Hope someone can help...

Hi,

What happens when you create a new user called test and login?
Does the test user have normal icons?
That would indicate that your profile is somehow involved if test was
normal.

Hope that helps,

I know about two places in the registry where a DefaultIcon can be
defined:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\explorer.exe\Drives\X\DefaultIcon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\X\DefaultIcon

Same result. :-(

Thanks, though...

Aha!
The first one doesn't exist in my registry.
The second one says: C:\WINDOWS\System32\VITrans\osdrive.ico,0
Is this right?

By default these settings are not presend, so Windows uses
the default icons. If you don't want a different icon, then
just delete the key from the registry.

I deleted the key and as if by magic, the right icon appeared (that's a
little in-joke for Brits over the age of about 30).

You are a total star, Uwe. Thank you so very much! :)
