DRAM timing question

I wanted to make sure I understood the DRAM timing CAS Latency issue.
As far as I know, most P4 motherboards would accept DDR modules regardless of
the CL timing,it's just the BIOS would "communicate" with memory and find an
appropriate timing.Or there's a way in BIOS setup to adjust the CAS latency
(called DRAM cycle speed or something alike there) according to the modules'
specs.Say if it's 2-3-5-5 then it's 2 (always the 1st digit) for CL...
If the system has memory problem ,I can input the slower value in BIOS setup
(ie. higher value).
Few mo-bo's have a CL requirement for SDRAM,so it's best to check with a
mo-bo manual.
And mixing different modules with different CL values is possible, but NOT
recommended, because sometimes it could create a problem.

So is it all correct? Is there anything I've missed?
thanks in advance!

When upgrading memory its often wise to use the memory manu configerator to
select memory guarenteed to work on your sys. Even so its sometimes
neccessary to 'underclock' the memory to take account of both the mobo and
cpu combination.
