Dragging or moving outline items?

In other wordprocessing programs we can drag or move individual outline
items to other sections of the outline without using cut and paste. In most
cases, the user simply grabs the outline number and drags the selected
outline item to another section of the outline. Is there a way to
accomplish this in Word 2007?

In such cases, the item now resides at the same level, but in a new section
of the outline. This allows the user to quickly note important ideas
(before they fade) in a rough outline. Subsequently, they can easily
rearrange the outline so that the elements are properly organized under the
desired sections.

In Word you can do this in Outline View where each item in the list will
have a round gray symbol to the left of the number or bullet. Use the symbol
to rearrange the list. This is the preferable view to use, especially since
the various outline levels can be collapsed making it easier to relocate
entire segments of the outlined text.

In other views the bullets & numbering are actually formatting applied to
the item paragraphs in the list. Therefore they can't be selected or
dragged. However, you can select the text of the item then drag it to a
different position in the list. The bullets will adjust accordingly &
numbering will remain in sequential order.

Thank you, Bob. This really helps, however, we are only seeing the round
gray symbols (as you indicated), but none of the +/- signs for collapsing
levels? Likewise, we can only move one line at a time versus the full
section. Furthermore, we cannot select specific levels, we only see the
outline if the 'Show Level' option for "All Levels" is selected.

Are we doing something wrong? We are using the standard (1. a. i.) default
outline and have also tried other multi-level outlines with the same result.
We are using Word 2007, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Richard

Thank you, Dean. This really helps, however, we are only seeing the round
gray symbols (can only move one line at a time), have none of the +/- signs
for collapsing levels (cannot promote/demote full levels), and cannot select
specific levels (we only see the outline if the 'Show Level' option for "All
Levels" is selected). We are using Word 2007, do you have any idea why this
is?

Thanks,

Richard

I have not gone over to 2007 yet so am not completed sure of the Outline
layout.
I have not heard of any major problems with this function in 2007 and lets
hope a 2007-guru will jump in here and assist with a simple solution.
Best of luck
