Many of the messages that I drag from my main inbox and drop into various
maliboxes disappear. I would like it to stop.

Version of Outlook?
Type of Account?

Drop it to another mailbox or to another folder or pst-file?

Reset the view of the folder you drop it in to make sure there is no filter
applied.

If you drag-and-drop a message from one folder to another, the default
operation is "move", which means it will, indeed, disappear from the source
folder. If you want to make a copy, right-click and drag and choose Copy.

The version is Outlook 2003. I have no idea what type of account.

It applies to messages being dragged and dropped to another mailbox.

I followed Oulook Help to Clear the Filters. It indicated that there were
no filters applied, but I clicked on Clear the Filters anyway to comply with
the instruction.

I just tried it again with the same result. The message did not appear in
the target mailbox, but the messages that had disappeared yesterday had all
reappeared. Not sure if that applies in all cases, but it did this one time.

to disappear from the original folder. That is the whole idea. The problem
is that they did not appear in the target folder. I just followed the
instructions of another respondent and then tried it again with the same
results, however, the messages which had disappeared yesterday have now
reappeared in the target mailbox.

I did drop it to another mailbox and rechecked the filter for the original target mailbox. There weren't any. I then tried to move it back to the target mailbox and once again, it does not show. I do have the view set so that it only gives a number of unread messages, so I tried it with an unread message. No change. If it performs as before, the messages that have disappeared will show up tomorrow - I hope. Thanks for your help
