why do some email messages disappear?

Some of my incoming email messages disappear, leaving only a blank line.
There does not seem to be a pattern. However, I notice that, when I'm typing
an outgoing email message, one of the incoming messages disappears each time
I strike a key. I can still read the lost emails online, but would like to
read them in Outlook. Any ideas?

Also, I do not synch with anything except the server.
