Hello,I recently reformatted my hard disk,and since I have done that,when I
try to Move an item using the mouse (drag and drop) it only Copies it to the
new location, and it does not Move the object from its original location.
How can I select that in WinXP Home Edtion?
Thanks

Alberto

When dragging a file, you can control the operation that will be
performed when you release the mouse button:

Hold the Control key to force a Copy.

Hold the Shift key to force a Move.

Hold the Alt key to force a Create Shortcut.

If you drag using the right mouse button, a menu appears with the commands
Move Here, Copy Here, Create Shortcut(s) Here, and Cancel. Click the
command you want.

If you drag an item to another disk, it is copied, not moved. To move the
item, press and hold down SHIFT while dragging.

Dragging a program to a new location creates a shortcut to that program. To
move a program, right-click and then drag the program to the new location.
You must be logged on as an administrator to move a program.

Will dragging a file result in a move or a copy?

Thanks Wes,Dragging a file will result in a Copy.
Before I formatted,I used to Drag and Drop, using Left side of mouse, say
,from folder 1 to folder 2,and it would just Cut (Move),not copy, and I would
like to revert to that, without pressing any other keys.
Thanks again

Is it possible the system thinks the Ctrl key is pressed? Or if you are
actually going Drive to Drive the default becomes Copy not Move.

Did you read what he said.

PS Wes, only exe registered in App Paths do shortcuts.

I copied that right from MS Help...

Dragging a program to a new location creates a shortcut to that program. To
move a program, right-click and then drag the program to the new location.
You must be logged on as an administrator to move a program.

But you're correct. How's this?

Dragging an .exe file that is not listed in App Paths moves the file.

Dragging an .exe file that is listed in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
creates a shortcut.

To move an .exe that is listed in App Paths, right click and then drag the
..exe to the new location.

by default .. if u r dragging a file in the same drive(C: to C:) then
it moves .. its like cut n paste ... but if u r moving it to a separate
drive letter (C: to D:) its always a copy never a move .. u gota use
the ctrl and/or shift keys to manipulate it ..

Ok,thanks for all the interesting answers.
To show exactly what I was doing before the format:

I have a Music folder opened, and a Playlist folder on my Desktop.
What I did before to Move files from the former to the latter was to grab
the file from the Music folder, using Left Click (on my mouse),and drag it
out of the folder and Drop it onto the Playlist folder, one click does it !

It is not happening like that anymore, when I do this it just copies the
file, and it is no use to me

I have had all along Service Pack2 also,so,I do not understand how I was
doing that before and now it won't happen.Something changed and I do not
have a clue what it is.

Regards and thanks again

first time)
