I just finished downloading a bunch from Windows XP. Now,
I find I have to log in if my computer is inactive for a
few minutes. How can I avoid this? Is there some way I
can cancel the download? It is extremely annoying and
unnecessary.

Well, from what you've said I'm not 100% sure what's happening but I'd
guess that your screensaver has been password protected. Right-click anywhere
on the desktop (away from icons and such), click Properties | Screen Saver
and make sure that the "On Resume, Password Protect" checkbox is cleared.
