Downloading WMV files

When I left click on a wmv file, for instance this one:

sunshinepreps.net/oldclip...Fayson.wmv

I used to be setup such that when I left clicked on such a link/file (a file to be played in a standalone media player, not one to be played in a web page imbedded player), the download box opened and, without asking if I wanted it to be saved or opened, the data downloaded automatically, and when finished downloading, would cause my media player to open and play. Under this scenario, which I wish were still in effect, to save the file, I would have to right click, then click on save as.

Now what happens is that when left clicking on the link, the dialogue box opens and asks me to confirm the saving of the file, and the file has to be saved (no option to open is displayed), and the only way to play it is to double click on the saved file, which then opens my media player.

I'm not talking about streaming. I AM talking about a file that needs to be downloaded in full before playing. The problem is that I do not want left clicking on that link to cause the save as box to open, I want it to cause the download to begin automatically and to automatically open and begin playing in my media player, or to begin playing in the player if I already have it open. It used to happen that way in this computer, and my previous one, but now each time I click on such a link, I have to save it to my hard drive and then left click to open it. In other words, I simply do not want to have to save all of these files to my hard drive before playing.

My Computer, Tools menu, Options, File Types, highlight the filetype, click Advanced. Remove check in "Confirm open after download"

Mark, the first and main problem is not one relating to what happens after the download, although yes, I DO want the file to automatically open after downloading. The first and main problem to solve is that I do not want left clicking on that link in the web page to cause the save as box to open, I want it to cause the download to begin automatically (NOT saving, but automatically start downloading, without prompting, as a prelude to the file opening automatically after the download finishes). Your solution speaks to what happens after the hoped for automatic download, and yes, I want the file automatically played after the download, without clicking on a saved file in my hard drive (I don't even WANT it saved to my hard drive, THAT'S the main point of this posting). But each time I click on such a link within a web page, the save as box comes up, and I have to save it to my hard drive, and I don't want to have to save all files of this type to the hard drive first before playing. So I want to click on such a link in a web page, have the download box open automatically without prompting, not asking me to save, and to automatically begin downloading without prompting, and THEN have the file played in my media player without my clicking on anything after I have clicked on the web page's link to the file. The feature you want is called a 'file association' (defining what happens when you institute a 'run' action on some filetype or
'extension')

Go to Start/Run, and type:

Default behavior for media player does exactly that. You have changed your options in WMP/Tools menu/Options.

Filetypes, Network, and Performance tabs all have things that can impact your buffering and streaming performance.

I'm not talking about the media player and settings of the media player. I'm talking about the downloading BEFORE the media player can even be used. The question revolves around how this type of file downloads. How can I left click the link on a web page to this type of file and have it NOT show me the save as box? I don't want to save it, I want it to automatically begin downloading to a temp file without asking me if I want to save it! At this point in the operation, the media player and its settings have not even become a factor. Please forget the media player. I'm talking about the downloading operation. Obviously, AFTER the downloading is finished, I want the media player to open, again, after the downloading, and play the temp file. The media player's settings only come into play when the media player is used. I'm talking about the downloading.

Plus, now, after trying to follow your directions, when I click on an already downloaded file (a wmv or mpg file) I saved to the hard drive, instead of the file beginning to play, a box asks me if I want to open the file. That never happened until yesterday. So now I have two problems.
