I have only had my computer for a couple months. I know I'm a late starter. I
feel like a big girl now (39)!! I do not know hardly anything about the
computer. I can send and receive email and just learned how to attach. I need
to know about downloading. Remember, I'm new, please use easy words so that I
will understand what you are telling me. I have windows prof. xp
Thanks

What do you need to know about downloading? Your subject line says
"downloading problems" but the body of your post doesn't tell us what
problems you are having.

Links to help you:

1. Make good newsgroup posts:

2. Tips for new PC owners:

3. Depending on your preferred way of learning, you may want to buy a
book about using XP. The "For Dummies" series is good, although they
have that unfortunate name.

4. XP's Help & Support is much better than the Help in older MS
operating systems. Don't hesitate to use it.

5. Computer Haven is a forum run by MVP Patty MacDuffie and is aimed at
new users. It is a warm and friendly place and I highly recommend it.

Well, I just need to know how to do it. The few times that I have tried, I
can't retrieve it, or I don't know how to retrieve it. I'll try some of your
ideas, thanks.

That's still pretty vague. Remember, I can't see your computer from
here. Very basically, find a file you want to download on a website and
click on it. If you have XPSP2 and are using Internet Explorer, you may
get the yellow Information Bar at the top of your browser. Click on it
for options to download the file. Download the file to somewhere you'll
find it - the Desktop or a folder called "Downloads" are good choices.

Thanks to both of you!! I'll try it.
Another thing, I know about viruses and spyware, but what is malware?

"Mal-" means "bad," and "malware" is just a general term to describe any
kind of software with an evil intent--viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, etc.

Thank you!! I said I was new! I'm so glad I stumbled onto this, now I don't
feel like I'm all by myself trying to figure everything out. I still think I
might look for a computer class. Thanks again, I'll probably be writing again.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Note, however, that you are using the web interface to read this
newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there is. Do
yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which
comes with Windows. See
