After I downloaded my mail from an exteral server (imap) to windows mail, I
couldn't acsess my old messages anymore by logging in to that account, only
from logging in to Windows Mail. Is there a way to transfer back those
messages or at least keep old mail at the external server?

I'm not sure about IMAP, but for POP accounts you can leave the messages on
the server via Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced.

No, and it doesn't sound like you used IMAP, either. IMAP always leaves
the messages on the server, POP by default removes them.

In the default POP scheme, messages are downloaded and deleted. You can
change this in the Advanced settings, "leave messages on the server" and
"for X days".

You can't put the messages back. You can re-send them to yourself, but
this really won't help you at all; all the messages will be from you, to
you, and within a few minutes, so the titles will be the only thing that
appears differently in the mailbox.
