I cannot download and install Java. My system hangs when it tries to
download. It also hangs when I try to run Liveupdate for my Norton AV. Can
someone please help me? I have XP SP2.

The two problems (in my experience) are related as you have worked out.
Downloading and installing Java will probably fix the Norton problem.

First I would go into Internet Options (from the TOOLS menu in Internet
Explorer) on the security tab make sure all settings are at default
level. Then on the advanced tab click restore defaults. Click apply and OK.
Now go to download Java..BUT..do not click the DOWNLOAD NOW button.
Instead look at little down on the page and click the link for manual
download. Choose Windows Offline Installation. Download to a folder and
run the program from the folder you saved it to.

I hope this helps.
