Downloading critical updates since SP2

G

Gordon

My brother-in-law who is, err, not of the first water computing-wise, has
acquired a new Dell with XP Home SP2. As he is only on 56k dial-up, I want
to download all the post-SP2 critical updates using my broadband
connection and saving them to a CD in order to install on his machine.
two questions: How do I find out all the critical updates post SP2, (my
Windows machine is fully patched as of now, so I can't tell from that!)
and then, is there a way of combining them all on a CD so that they all
install at one go rather than having to install them one after the other?

Thanks

Hello, This link maybe of some help.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296861/
mulitiple updates on one reboot

You could go the Microsoft Auto-Update site, using his computer and receive
a list of the needed updates, then to:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
for downloading and then attemp to use the information in 296861 for the
installation.

Not unlike your brother-in-law I am computer maintenance challenged. I do
not know if this will be useful for your endeavor.

take care.

Very nice answer, however to save you hours of frustrating reading
only to find you couldn't use any of the Update Management Strategies
until you get to Qchain, go here after you get through with getting
all the service bulletins.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;296861&sd=tech
This will explain how to Qchain all the ones that can be Qchained.
As for your own system, it will be very useful to tell you which
security updates to get. They are listed in Add/Remove Programs under
Windows XP Software Update etc (~51), indicating their KB number. Have
fun.
