Downloaded updates what happened to old email?

I downloaded updates for outlook today and had to reset up my email account.
I imported my old account but my old emails were not there. Could you tell
me what happened to them and if I can get them back?

What did you import? Why did you have to import anything after installing an
update? BTW, what update was it?
