Downloaded file disappears...

Hi,

I use Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit). Whether I use IE7 or
Firefox, when I download a file, everything looks good. But then when
I go to the designated folder, it's not there. However, when I use
Google Chrome, it ends up being there. This includes all types of
files, even right-clicking on an image and saving it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for helping. IE downloads files fine now, but Firefox still
doesn't.

Hi again,

I know it's been 2 weeks or so, but I still can't keep/store a
downloaded file using IE7 nor Firefox 3. I took your advice and used
the Disk Cleanup utility, and temporarily had success with keeping
files using IE7, but no more. I used Disk Cleanup twice today,
rebooted each time, but to no avail. It's so weird to not be able to
download files after doing this for 14.5 years. Any help/advice would
be highly appreciated. Thanks again!

Possibly not a related issue but I once had a problem with files being
stuck in the virtual folder after download. The virtual folders are hidden
from explorer but the file did turn up in an extended search. Don't remember
what the cause was but it only affected specific downloads at the time. I
created a shortcut to the virtual download folder in case it ever happened
again. The location would be similar to the following if you want to try
browsing to the folder directly:

"C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Virtualized\C\Users\<username>\Documents\Downloads"

Hi RalfG,

Thanks for the reply and info. I tried typing in the path through
Windows Explorer, but to no avail. After I got past ...C\Users\David
I couldn't find \Documents\Downloads. At that point, I only had three
folders named AppData, Pictures, and Searches. Maybe I'll try through
a DOS box. (?) Do you have any advice at this point?

The virtual folders are deeply hidden from Explorer and you can't normally
see them by browsing folders even if you unhide everything in the Explorer
options "view" settings..

You can try making a shortcut on the desktop to take you directly to the
downloads. I tested it just now and it worked so as long as the path is
corrected for your own computer it should work for you. Take the path I
gave, including quotes, and copy into into memory. Right click any open
space on your desktop, click New->Shortcut and paste the path in as the
location, then change the boot drive (C:\ and \C\) <note there is no colon
with the second entry> and the two username entries <leave out the brackets>
in the path to match the boot drive and your login name on your computer.
Click Next, give the shortcut a name and try it.

If the missing files are in the virtualized download folder they should show
up but in case the files are also flagged hidden you might try temporarily
unhiding hidden files and folders plus protected operating system files in
Explorer options. (Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-View)

Good luck.

Thanks RalfG! I can now find downloaded files that disappear
immediately upon finishing the download, at least through IE. No luck
with Firefox yet.

Well that's some progress anyway. The Firefox downloads may be going to a
different virtual folder, or something else could be happening to them. It
was some time ago and I've forgotten the exact method I used to find the
virtual folders originally. I certainly used Search to locate the missing
files, but whether it was done in Safe mode or logged in as THE
Administrator account or both I don't recall. I only ever had trouble with
one download situation and haven't had to recover files from any other since
then.

Hi,

I am also facing the same problem of file disappearing after the
download. I tried to follow the instructions to create the shortcut
but I am getting the error message "The file .....can not be found"
once I click Next button. Can you please help? I gave the following
file name by replacing the <UserName> with my user name present in the
computer. I also included the whole path in double quotes. My
Operating System is C drive and hence did not change C\: and \C\:

"C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary
Internet Files\Virtualized\C\Users\<UserName>\Documents\Downloads"

Thanks,
HRSum
