You can set up your windows to update automatic, and set the option to
install later when you want to click it. It should be in Control Panel,
Performance and Maintance, System, under Automatic Updates tab
Check the option where it said "keep my computer up to date........."
and then under settings.
chose Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready
to be installed.
For Recommended ones, the best way seems to be to clear out Temp
Internet files (for convenience) which is where the initial download
goes to; then get the update and when it is sitting on the License
screen, copy the downloaded .exe out to another folder - then cancel the
install or not as desired.

I wish I'd seen this post a few months ago. I have kept XP Home
updated so when I go to the MS site it checks to see what I need. But
I'd like to keep copies of the various updates since MS will doubtless
soon want more of everyone's money and will discontinue support. Is
there any way downloading these files now?

If you really feel masochistic, you can do a repair install of the
system, which will put you back to square one.Get the SP1 'Network'
download, install and save. Then download all the later patches and
save them in the process.
