My isp is nagging me about my usage.
I suspect that it might be a streaming webcam, now that I am on 4Mb access.
Is there a piece of freeware that I can use to keep a check on my downloads
as they are happening?

Netmeter, and DLUL meter free...

Thanks that works fine and FWIW I overran my isp limits through leaving a
remote streaming webcam running for ages.
