with outlook express i can set a rule that deletes unwanted messages (things
like "a virus email has been intercepted" or "a spam mail had been detected")
on my isp's servers before they are downloaded to my pc's, is there a way of
creating the same rule on my outlook 2002 pc?

I cannot tell you anything about OE usage, though I doubt it has the ability
to delete from the mail server prior to download.
You have to set rules in OL to deal with mail as it is downloaded. ie the
rule operates after the mail has been downloaded.
I assume these msgs you receive, or are appended to the mail subject line,
are placed there by your AV/Spam application.

FYI, OE does have the ability to delete from the server prior to download.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, DL asked:

No. Outlook must download in order to process a message. However, add-ins
like Mailwasher (http://www.mailwasher.net/) can help in that regard.
