How do you d/l a file? I can't find the secret formula!

The morons are bullshitting. They haven't downloaded a file from a
binaries group through that site. It only allows you to make and
download nzb files.

Exactly. That's what I discovered.
I'm not even sure what .nzb files are or what they do...

The web-site allows you to browse the binary forums and essentially
create a type of 'shopping list' or 'download list' - you can then feed
this list (.nzb file) into an appropriate newsreeder. If you have a
usenet account that has access to the relevent binaries forums then the
newsreeder will then go and download the files you selected.

The advantage is you don't need to download all the headers from a
forum in order to find a binary you want.

This is my understanding of it but I am sure someone will correct me if
I have got it wrong :-)

OK I'll buy that more or less. It seems that you still need a Usenet
account for the relevant newsgroups to d/l the binaries. I had hoped
that this website got around that issue by allowing d/l through HTTP
instead of NNTP. No such luck :-(

I was equally disapointed

There must be a huge market for such a thing ...it would allow use of
download managers - eg FlashGet.

Indeed, you still need a usenet account with access to binaries
groups. A special advantage of nzb files is that you can download a
file even when its header is missing and you don't see it listed in
your binaries newsreader, such as Grab-It, but which can handle nzb
files.

Thanks for that. My ISP dropped all binary newsgroups a while back and
I'd hoped this was a neat way round it w/o subscribing to another NSP
on top of Individual.net :-(

Sometimes there are free binaries test servers. Look in
alt.free.newsservers for announcements (a lot of quarelling idiots
there unfortunately) or search the web.
