download duplications?

Is there anyway of preventing XP from making duplicates of downloads? When
we download to a specific file we then discover that it has also been copied
to other folders located in Documents and Settings/local and some other
folders that I can't remember. We discovered this when trying to clean up
unused files to free up space. It appears that XP is determined to have a
history of everything hidden all over the place.

They are files downloaded from the internet to a folder on a different
drive. After we have deleted them we sometimes find them in folders on our
C drive (where we didn't put them).

What folders on the c drive do you find these in? A temp folder by any
chance? What kind of files?
