RE: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx

I had previously downloaded the Media 6 package when I
got this HP Model ze4315us laptop last summer. I connect
via 56K phone at 49-50 with my earthlink ISP in Lebanon,
NH. I was at fox news and decided to down load the media
9 upgrade -- MPSetupXP.exe. I got 75% through the
process before losing contact with Microsoft server. I
tried two more times one reaching 20% the other 40%.
What is the problem? I do not have a problem with the
Microsoft update page unless I am downloading large files
in which case the amount of download is saved and I can
restart. Thanks Sam

You're just experiencing the normal problem with downloading large files
when you have a dialup Internet connection. Sometimes the line isn't
clear, your ISP knocks you off, there's interference, the server gets
busy, etc. Lots of things can go wrong. As far as a "resume" feature
goes, that has to be supported by the website from which you're
downloading. MS obviously has set up their system to permit resume
because they know that a lot of their users only have dialup. The best
way to deal with this (short of going to a broadband Internet
connection!) is to install a download assistant program like GetRight,
Download Accelerator, or Star Downloader to name a few. You do have to
be careful that the one you choose doesn't come with spyware. I don't
know if those 3 I mentioned are good or not, but you can do some
searching through Google and maybe ask on the www.spywareinfo.com
forums for suggestions.

The latest version of get right is spyware free, however
get right is defaulted not to work with windows update.
However it is a must have if you use dialup for other
downloads.
