do i get the key from. can it be from a pc already running
2k?

eg if i have 2 pcs sitting on a desk. one is running 2k
the other xp pro (OEM Version). can i use the key from the
2k machine to downgrade the xp box to 2k??????????????

(I need 2k for one specific application.)

Is this the volume license version of xp and what oem did you buy it from?
Non-volume license versions are not eligable for downgrades. If it is volume
license your oem will give you the correct keys and cd if you qualify for
the downgrade.

Greetings --

Yes, any Win2K Product Key valid for the specific type of CD being
used will work. You're just using the Key to perform the
installation; the WinXP COA and Product Key represents your true
license.

If your OEM license for Windows XP includes the downgrade rights (most
do but not necssarily all) then yes you do it exactly as described.

Your XP license and product key are considered "used up" even though
the software and product key are not actually installed on a computer.

See http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/downloads/downgrade_chart.doc
for details. The relevant information for your circumstance is in the
"System Products" column.

Good luck
