I purchased a laptop last year. It came with that Vista. I would like to
remove Vista and revert back to XP.

1. Check with the laptop mftr. regarding whether this voids your
warranty. Make your decision accordingly.

2. Check with the laptop mftr. regarding downgrade rights and if they
support them. If they do, then get an XP recovery disk for that laptop
if recovery disks are the way the laptop mftr. provides the ability to
return to factory condition.

3. If the laptop mftr. doesn't support downgrade rights and/or doesn't
have a recovery disk for XP on the machine, go to the laptop mftr.'s
website and make sure there are drivers and laptop-specific software for
XP for your model. If there are no drivers and laptop-specific software,
forget about putting XP on the machine.

4. If the laptop mftr. does provide XP drivers, etc. but doesn't have a
recovery disk for XP you can still install XP but you will need to
purchase a full retail copy of XP for the laptop. Then back up all your
data and do a clean install per:

What you will need on-hand

I would also like to go back to XP, but my new replacement computer came with
Vista.

FWIW - DELL is now selling computers with xp installed - they also have
several models with ubuntu linux pre-installed.

Vista wasn't released until Jan 30, 2007.

I thought that too but then remembered that the Jan. 30th date was when
Vista was released to the *retail* channel. The big box OEMs (Dell, HP,
etc.) got it I believe in Sept. 2006 in time for the Christmas purchases.

That's when it was released to the retail market. It was available to
OEMs, and on MSDN, late last year.

Who gives a Rats Ass about Dell selling Ubuntu? If you want to be the
Ubuntu evangalist, go slither over to the Ubuntu groups.

When did "Ubuntu" become the greatest Linux ever? PCLinuxOS is much
better. Better included apps, certainly better looking, and it
installs in VPC - unlike "Ubuntu".

And who the hell picks these names anyway? WTF is "Ubuntu"? Could
they have chosen an uglier, clumsier sounding name? At least with
PCLinuxOS, you know exactly what it is.
