Downgrading on an old computer from XP to 98

Have an old computer (3 gig HD / 128 RAM) that my little girl uses exclusively for Instant Messaging and email. Recently got repair and the tech loded XP, replacing 98. With computer running out of resources, was told I should uninstall XP and put 98 on to run better and not use as many resources. Could not uninstall XP via Control panel, although Windows Help instructions said I could. Installed 98 via disk and booted up running 98.

Problem is that even more space is gobbled up now and I can't acces any of the XP files to get rid of them. Can't even find them via Explorer, yet space is now critical on hard drive (down from 350 MB to 95). Can't load Cable connection software
access Internet due to lack of Hard drive space.

Any suggestions as to where I can look to find and remove the XP to remove the 98 and get XP back as the operating system. Thanks

Did the tech leave the XP CD with you after he installed XP?
If you have the XP CD, set the BIOS to boot the CDROM,
select install, and the previous installations will be
seen... select to remove the current partitions and do a
clean install. You may need your W98 CD as proof if the XP
CD is an upgrade version.

You will lose all the files. If you can afford to spend a
few dollars, adding at least another 128 or a 246 MB RAM
will help operation considerably. The 3 GB hard drive is
just big enough for XP and a few applications.

Go to:

http://www.bootdisk.com

Download a Windows 98 SE boot disk, and save it to your hard drive. Double click the
downloaded file, you'll be asked to insert a floppy disk, and a Windows 98 SE boot disk
will be created. Boot that system with that floppy and select the option for CD ROM
support, then:

type: format C:
then press the enter key
and format the C drive FAT32.

After the C drive has been formatted, open the CD ROM drive and run setup.exe from that
CD. If it's a Windows 98 SE CD, you'll be asked if you want to boot from your hard drive
or the Windows 98 SE CD. Boot from the Windows 98 CD (remove the floppy disk) and setup
will begin. If it isn't the SE version, you'll have to use switch to the CD ROM drive
(the letter of that CD ROM drive for install will probably be E, so you'd type: E: and
then press the enter key. Then when the prompt reads E:\ type: setup.exe and press the
enter key and Windows 98 setup should begin on a clean drive.

Greetings --

The normal way to "uninstall" _any_ operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

However, if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to
backup the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS,
then all you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

I misread the original post. My response was for getting a clean install Windows 98, NOT
Windows XP, up and running. Although, if you don't have much hard drive space, and don't
want to purchase a larger hard drive, I'd suggest staying with Windows 98.

The tech was NOT a tech. No tech would put XP on a 3 gig hard drive.
