every time I use word or excell and save it to the desktop, when i open it
again I get a message about not being able to open the second one and do I
want to makle a copy or its in use and do I want to make a copy. I have done
a search and the only ones found are the ones on the desktop, where are
these others ???

Run regedt32.exe and have a look at the Reg_Expand_Sz string values of

"Desktop"
found in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
(should be) %USERPROFILE%\Desktop
and

"Common Desktop"
found in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
(should be) %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop

Sound like they're pointing to the same place.

Thanks for the quick reply, I checked out your instructions for
regedt32.exe, but both were the way they were suppose to be according to

Choose Detect and Repair from the Help menu.

message after the doc opens: " A document with the name JOHN.xls is already
open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the
documents are in different folders. To open the second document, either
close the document thats currently open or rename one of the documents".

following message after the document opens : " C:\...\Desktop\Label4.doc is
being used by ken. Do you want to make a copy."

I get the same messages even if I save excel,word docs to a different file
folder other than the desktop.

OK, you led us to believe it was a desktop folder issue. It sounds like your
Office installation has some corruption. You might try repairing or
reinstalling Office or ask them in office.setup

Hi George,

This is common for Office 97 users. Either way:

For Word: Go to Start/Run and type in: winword /r
For Excel: Go to Start/Run and type in: excel /regserver
For PowerPoint: Start/Run and type in: powerpnt /regserver
For Access:Go to Start/Run and type in: msaccess /regserver
