Double Spacing?

I was told that the double spacing after a period is now no longer required and taken out. Is this true?

Yes, it's true -- according to some (most?) people. Since most writing in
Word is done with proportionally spaced fonts, the general concensus is that
the font's built-in spacing is good enough. A vocal minority feels
otherwise.

There is nothing automatic in Word that removes double spaces without
asking. (I'm not sure why not, because there are plenty of annoying things
Word does without asking...) You can set a preference in the
spelling/grammar checker's options to highlight either one or two spaces as
an error, but that's all it does.
