Double Space when I press "Enter"

Hi, everybody. Newbie here. In my Word 2002 documents, when I want to start a new line, I press Enter and I move doown 2 lines instead of one. Where do I find the setting to stop this?
Second Question: Is there any way to instruct Word to accept informal composition--i.e. not using full sentences?
Thank you for your help.

1. Go to Format | Paragraph | Spacing and change "space after" to "0."
2. Go to Tools | Options | Spelling and Grammar | Settings and check or
uncheck those things you want grammar check to include.
Hope this helps.

You should only press ENTER for a new *paragraph* for a new line Word will
wrap text at the margins automatically. For a new line *within* a paragraph
press SHIFT+ENTER. However the paragraph spacing you identify is caused by
having inter-paragraph spacing set in the current paragraph style.

By default the Normal style does not have spacing, but you may have added
it. JD has explained how to remove it from selected paragraphs, however to
ensure that future documents have this setting make the change in the
paragraph style and check the add to template button of the style dialog,
then on quitting Word confirm the prompt to save normal.dot. If you are not
getting that prompt, check its option in tools > options > save. You need to
know when Word wants to make changes, rather than letting it do so.

For your first question, also make sure that Vertical alignment is set
to "Top" on the Layout tab of the File>Page Setup dialog box.

I am having this same problem. Shift enter is a temporary fix but is there a
permanent one? My vertical alignment is at "top" and my paragraph is at
"after/0"
and that doesn't help?

I don't understand you other explanations above, can you explain it more
clearly?
How do I get rid of the extra line permanently. Thank you for your help.

Make sure that both Space After AND Space Before are set to 0.
